Person of the Day: Assistant Professor Jarno Vanne

I’m 41 years old Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Pervasive Computing at TUT. I’m the founder and leader of Ultra Video Group that is nowadays the largest academic video coding group in Finland. We develop tailored video coding solutions for various multimedia applications on diverse computing platforms ranging from low-power embedded devices to highly distributed cloud environments. Maybe our most well-known outcome is an award-winning open-source Kvazaar HEVC encoder. Btw, if you find this interesting there are currently many open positions

Working as a team leader and innovator in a goal-oriented and hardworking research team keeps me motivated every day. In my view, excellent team spirit and wellbeing of the individuals are the key elements to success. I spend my working hours managing several industrial research projects including three European projects 4KREPROSYS, VIRTUOSE, and PRYSTINE at the moment. I also travel quite a lot for various project meetings, exhibitions, brokerage events, and conferences. My current ambition is to steer the research towards real-time 3D/360 video coding in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) using next-generation intelligent video coding technologies.

For me, free time means being with my family either at home in Kangasala or getting out and about in the world. My hobbies include gym – well, the bench press is the thing – in the winter time but when the weather gets warmer I prefer jogging and biking outdoors. I’m also an enthusiastic ice hockey fan and there is a thing called “Patasydän” beating inside me.
